GSU Homecoming

Grambling State returns home to face the Alabama St Hornets for Homecoming this weekend. Grambling lost to Texas Southern last week 33-28, while Alabama St lost to Alabama A&M 21-13.

When ASU has the ball:
Jay Peck leads the SWAC in rushing yards this season averaging 113 yards on the ground. Peck is an elusive running back, whose speed could give the Grambling defense trouble. Alex Engram has been plagued by inconsistency this season; Engram has completed 8 out of 29 passes in the last two contests. Alabama State has used a two-quarterback system the majority of the season, last week the Hornets two quarterbacks went a combined 4 out of 21 in a loss to Alabama A&M. Grambling’s defense was completely embarrassed last weekend. Grambling’s defense looked extremely slow, untalented, undisciplined, undetermined, unreliable, and uninformed in the first half against TXSU. Grambling’s defense is ranked 9th in the SWAC. David Hicks had nine tackles last week. Texas Southern may have produced the blue print on how to beat Grambling last weekend. Grambling’s front seven will once again be the key to a victory on Saturday, if they can get penetration and stuff the run, fans, friends and alumni will have plenty to celebrate on Saturday.

Advantage: Alabama State

When GSU has the ball:
Ranked first in total offense in the conference, the Grambling State Tigers scored 21 unanswered points only to fall short to Texas Southern last weekend. Brandon Landers threw for 280 yards and three interceptions in the loss. The offensive line was totally lost last weekend, surrendering five sacks and never really giving Landers time to get comfortable in the pocket. Landers impressively ran for 62 yards in the game. Henry Tolbert had yet another productive game; Tolbert had eight catches for 93 yards and a score. Ab Kuuan gained 58 yards on 12 carries. No matter how talented Grambling’s offense is, they can’t afford to turn the ball over four times in a game and expect to win. Alabama St has the best defense in the SWAC. The Hornets give up 19 points a game and only allow 118 yards thru the air. The Hornets defense will be tested this weekend, Grambling will feed off the homecoming energy in the air.
Advantage: Grambling

Grambling leads the all-time series 20-8. Both teams are the last two SWAC champs and have almost no chance of making it back to Birmingham. Grambling needs to establish the running game early to insert some type of balance in their offensive attack. Grambling pride is on the line in this game and I don’t think they will disappoint on Homecoming.
