Grambling returns to the state of Texas for the third time this season to square off against the University of Texas Southern. Grambling defeated Jackson State 36-7 last week, while Texas Southern fell to Mississippi Valley State 20-18.
When TSU has the ball:
Ranked last in total offense thus far Texas Southern has struggled offensively this season. TSU averages 14.5 ppg and has only scored 20 points or more once this season. Tino Edgecombe has been their most productive quarterback in 06. Edgecombe has completed 57 percent of his passes and has four touchdowns against six interceptions this season. Brent Wilson averages 3.3 yards per carry and 56 yards a game and Daniel Davis leads the receiving core with 22 receptions on the season. Texas Southern ranks last in the conference in rushing, ninth in passing efficiency, and sixth in passing. Grambling’s defense pitched a shutout in the 36-7 victory over Jackson State last week. Jackson State gained 148 total yards in the loss, however, Grambling still ranks 9th in total defense in the conference. Texas Southern doesn’t possess the type of athletes that could give Grambling trouble, when focused. Grambling’s front seven will need to clog the lanes to prevent Wilson from having a big day.
Advantage: Grambling
When GSU has the ball:
Grambling’s offense has continued to roll in 2006. The Tigers have the SWAC’s best offensive attack. Brandon Landers is averaging 251 yards thru the air and was named the conferences offensive player of the week. Clyde Edwards and Henry Tolbert continue to cause match up problems for opposing teams. In last week’s victory over Jackson, both Edwards and Tolbert had over 100 yards receiving. However, the most impressive stat to come out of the victory was the fact that Grambling didn’t allow a sack in the game. Grambling hasn’t given up a sack in the month of October this season. If the offensive line continues to give its quarterbacks time to throw, GSU will pick opposing teams apart. Texas Southern enters the contest with the third best defense in the conference. TXSU only gives up 283 yards a game. Stacey Thomas leads the conference in tackles. Texas Southern doesn’t have the secondary to stay with Grambling’s dangerous receivers, and will likely be chasing the receivers all day.
Advantage: Grambling
Grambling leads the all time series 40-15-3. With the victory last week over Jackson State, Grambling still has a chance to return to Birmingham and defend its SWAC title. Grambling, more then likely will need to win out and hope for a UAPB loss along the way.
